• 8:30 am -9:30 am : Group Zen Meditation and Formal Zen Tea (Free) [details]
The session includes seated and walking meditation and the chanting of the Heart Sutra followed by the traditional, formal drinking of tea at one's place in the Meditation Hall. Tea is enjoyed in silence as a form of meditative practice. A most mindful way to start the weekend.
• 9:30 am -10:30 am : Qigong Class (Free, donations are appreciated) [details]
The Qigong class begins shortly after morning Zen meditation and consists of 60 minutes of Qigong internal energy exercises and meditations conducted in a relaxed atmosphere. Qigong exercises strengthen the muscles and sinews, boost the immune system and help one to regulate the body's internal energy for purposes of health, longevity and spirituality. Qigong is a valuable adjunct to Zen meditation practice but can also be a stand-alone practice for those who do not study or practice Zen.
• 10:30 am -12:30 pm : Class: "The Basics of Buddhism" (8 weeks, fee) [details]
The class is designed to clarify our understanding of the Buddhist tradition. Class sessions are held on Saturday mornings from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., beginning on September 15th and ending on November 3rd. Topics include the core teachings of Buddhism as well as the history and evolution of Buddhism from ancient India to modern times. The text for the class will be "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Understanding Buddhism" by Gary Gach. Regular tuition is $100 which includes the cost of the textbook. For those interested in the Lay Buddhist Curriculum, the tuition is discounted to $80. Lay Buddhist students have the opportunity to take the Five Lay Buddhist Precepts in a ceremony which will be held on October 30th at 8:00 p.m. The deadline for registration is Tuesday, September 11th.
